Since 1989, the Inland Seas Education Association has operated “floating classroom” programs where people of all ages can learn about the ecology of the Great Lakes by spending a half-day sailing and studying science on Grand Traverse Bay. The knowledge gained through these experiences will provide the leadership, understanding and commitment needed for the long-term stewardship of the Great Lakes. From June until August, the group offers Family Schoolship programs aboard the “Inland Seas,” a 77-foot, two-masted schooner and the 31-foot Friendship sloop “Liberty,” both based in Suttons Bay. Rates start at $30 per person, and groups of 25 to 28 can be accommodated.

This catamaran accommodates up to 43 people and offers excursions that include a morning kids cruise, a noon cruise, a champagne sunset cruise and a night cruise. The Nauti-Cat sails out of the Holiday Inn in Traverse City on West Grand Traverse Bay. Cruises range in length from 90 minutes to five and a half hours.

Sailing out of Traverse City, the 114-foot long, 62-passenger schooner Manitou sails Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day offering three different 2-hour cruises every day of the week. Wine Tasting Cruises, featuring wine from Leelanau Cellars and Mediterranean food by Silver Swan Homemade Foods, are offered on Tuesday evenings in July and August. Entertainment with “Song of the Lakes” takes place on the Wednesday evening cuise in July and August. Spend the night on our Floating Bed & Breakfast, Tuesday through Saturday. Three Day Windjammer Cruises to the islands, bays, and coastal villages of Lake Michigan will operate during the month of September.
