Grand Traverse Resort and Spa’s original course, Spruce Run, began as the Acme Public Golf Course, was expanded to 18 holes in the late 1970s, then redesigned in 1979 by former University of Michigan Golf Coach, William Newcomb. During development of Gary Player’s, The Wolverine, it was shortened to par-70. The name Spruce Run is a reflection of numerous fir and spruce trees that line its fairways. Spruce Run features water on 13 holes.

Grand Traverse Resort and Spa’s best known golf course officially opened on June 17, 1985 and is credited by some with sparking the explosion of designer golf course construction in northern Michigan. The Bear has been the home of the state’s oldest and most prestigious tournament, the Michigan Open, since 1985. The Bear hosted the Ameritech Senior Open in 1990. It is a links-style course which features terraced fairways, tiered greens, deep grassy roughs, moguls and mounds and deep pot bunkers.

Grand Traverse Resort and Spa’s newest course and Gary Player’s signature course in Michigan was designed to be flexible and playable with four sets of tees to accommodate golfers of all abilities. The course is enjoyable for high-handicappers yet can be set up to be a true test for professional tournaments. The Wolverine has distinctive nines. The front nine is woven through water and wetlands. The back nine is constructed on rolling highland terrain with hardwoods and views of East Grand Traverse Bay.
